I have been getting a few emails asking about the basics – what is my room like? Is the food any good? So here are a few photos.

First, my bed, bug net and “desk.” The bed is comfortable, and I get wireless internet access. In the mornings while getting dressed I listen to streaming WBUR.

Second, the south wall of my room. This is like a shot out of “Cribs: East Timor.” What you don’t see is that I also have a toaster and a TV that gets one Portuguese channel. If this picture were in a Timorese magazine, I would tear it out.

Finally, my dinner (and feet). Mana Betinha cooks for Telibert and me. Twice a day she puts little, cellophane-covered dishes of rice, salad and a cooked vegetable in my room. Sometimes there is a little tofu, sometimes there are two dishes of cooked vegetables, sometimes she makes mung beans in sweet milk. The food is fresh and delicious. The only thing I have missed is yogurt, but a tub costs $7. So not much protein, but at once a week I go to a beach restaurant for whole grilled fish.
