Today I missed a couple of hours of class to go to the University of Wisconsin’s travel clinic. They were total pros, perhaps a reflection of the fact that Wisconsin sends more students to the Peace Corps than any other school. The doctor patiently walked me through the recommended injections and anti-malarial options. I decided on Lariam – a drug that I will only have to take once a week rather than daily. While some people have strong reactions to the drug – depression, anxiety, strange dreams a la Dali – most do not.

People usually experience side effects by the third dose, so I will know if I have an adverse response quite soon. At the clinic, I was also able to finish my Hepatitis A series, and I began the vaccinations for both Japanese Encephalitis and rabies (in Indonesian, rabies is called "crazy dog disease"). Next week I will take care of Typhoid. It feels good to cross another thing off my list.
The last couple of weeks I have been feeling more and more ready to head-out – a combination of receiving my plane ticket and going to the travel clinic (“nuts and bolts” concerns out of the way), and mounting restlessness being in class. It is nice to have the itch to travel.
